"Matrimonial Harmonics"
Hand-colored copper etching by James Gilray (1756-1815)
The two love birds of yesteryear have entered the stage of "normality" in their matrimonial togetherness. The lady plays dissonant accords on the piano, the husband endulges in the study of a newspaper and holds his ear shut as the maid brings in the screaming baby. Their pre-matrimonial harmony has vanished. Even the cat humps and the parrots quarrel as the shrill and poisoned atmosphere in this advanced matrimonial scene prevails.
These caricaturer were printed around 1870. (They were first published by Hannah Humphrey in London, 1805)
Very good condition. Both prints are handsomely hand-colored. On reverse sides are other uncolored cartoons.
Each print: 27 x 37.5 cm (approx 10.6 x 14.8 ")
