Sebastian Muenster writes about the Canary Islands: ""Insulae Fortunatae (The Happy Islands) are now called Canary Islands or Dog Islands - Latin: Canis = Dog), because the indigenous people possess so many dogs"
The name Dog Islands did not last very long, however.
