"Insula Creta hodie Candia in sita IV Territoria Divisa cum adiacentibus Aegei Maris Insulis ac praefertim nuperrime ex abysso pelagi emergente Nova Santurini Insula É"
The Island of Kreta and many of the Aegean islands.
Copper engraving. Published by Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724)
Nuremberg, 1723
The island of Kreta has delicate original hand coloring, the islands, too, except as borderline coloring.
The cartouche enriched with Neptune, Mercury and an Ottoman lady, a putto and a rich staffage of Greek grapes symbolizing the Greek tradition of wine making. Crete covers the bottom half of the map, the sheer size allowing for great and precise geographical detail
Original antique print
