Ireland, "The City of Dublin"
"The City of Dublin"
Very attractively hand-colored impressive panoramic view of Dublin, from the position of a half bird's eye view.
Stated below by the publisher: "Being No. 1 of a series of views of the Principal Capitals in Europe Presented gratis to the Subscribers to The Illustrated London News" (TILN)
Large, smashing folio areal view of Ireland's Capital Dublin.
Wood engraving signed Smyth in lower right corner. There are no specifics about Smyth's curriculum vitae - unfortunately.
The view was published in "The Illustrated London News". London, 1846
Since the format size of TILN was much smaller than this print, the engraving had to be vertically folded several times in order to fit in. Folded and unfolded probably many times the vertical folds lost their sharp edges. Smoothed out and partially enforced, these folds do not disturb much at all. The overall impression of this fantastic view with its immense largeness is overwhelming! Upper margin was cut tapered. In order to square the margin it was amended, so that the margin including title is straight. Some tears in margins (one into the sky) have been restored.
