An original antique 1870 edition of this important and highly regarded work on the Indigenous peoples of North America, published in Philadelphia by Rice, Rutter & Co.

This offering is for Volume I only, containing 40 superbly hand-colored lithographic plates, heightened with gum arabic. The plates include portraits of Native American chiefs in traditional dress, along with the plate “Hunting the Buffalo.” Each plate retains its original tissue guard.

Originally published in three volumes with a total of 100 plates, this offering includes Volume I with 40 plates.

The volume is exceptionally well preserved. The plates are in superb condition, with their original tissue guards, and the copy is clean and appears to have seen very little use.

Condition: Very good, with plates in superb condition and binding showing only very minor signs of handling

The binding features five raised bands on the spine, with five compartments. The second and fourth compartments are lettered in gilt with the title and “Vol. I”; the remaining compartments are decorated with impressed botanical motifs. The three edges are gilt.

A former owner's name is handwritten in ink on a preface page, dated July 13, 1876.
