between the high ranges and their foothills, the so-called piedmont or foot hill region, as well as between the foothills and the lowlands. To the south and south-east Appalachian North America received during the Tertiary period a comparatively considerable increase in land through the receding of the sea, and thus the strata of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico were formed; However, due to a drop that has probably continued to the present day, this increase has again suffered a sharp reduction. Otherwise in the south there were only the atmospheric elements: the alternation of frost and heat, downpours, flowing waters, winds, engaged in eager work of transformation, degrading mountain heights, valleys

filing, removing and enveloping masses of rubble, but deceiving their tremendous energy, achieving more considerable effects only over very long periods of time (f. the illustration, p. 52). It has already been mentioned that in the north, during the later Tertiary period, the solid land bridge which once connected the eastern half with Greenland and Europe collapsed. In the following geological age, however, the widespread glaciation there exerted its effects far beyond the borders of the Laurentian country, abrading and displacing loose rock, damming and diverting flowing waters, destroying or driving away organisms, and stamping their peculiar general physiognomy on the surface of the soil. Of course, the changes mentioned, which we describe as minor in physical-geographical terms because they no longer significantly altered the basic structure of the relevant hereditary area, are of extraordinarily great importance in cultural and economic-geographical terms.
