Anonymous steel engraving with stunning original gouache hand coloring.

Published by Von Zabern

Mainz, 1847

The Zabern publication of views of the River Rhein had all images trimmed to fit into a decorative bordure, onto which the original prints were then mounted.

The view shows the chateau from behind. The view goes across the river Rhein (Rhine) well into the moth and the run of the River Lahn.

The original castle of Stolzenfels was built in the 13th century, by the arch bishop pf Trier. Changing historical events had the castle, amended, destroyed, rebuilt, added to over the centuries. Towards the end of the 17th century Stolzenfels was a mere ruin and remained in the sad state. In Napoleonic times the ruin was in the possession of the nearby City of Koblenz. Prince Frederic of Prussia began with the restoration of the ruin. The restoration was completed in 1842.
