Published by Zabern. Mainz, 1847

Sitting on a rock above the River Rhein (Rhine) the castle "Rheinstein" was built in the 14th century. The castle had, like most age-old castles, a varied and changeful history. In 1823 the castle (it was a ruin by that time) was purchased by Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig von Preussen (a Prussian prince). It was restored between 1825 and 1829. The castle stayed in Royal Prussian possession until 1953, when Princess Barbara Irene of Prussia tried to sell it and was taken by potential buyer who turned out to be crook. He took much of the movable interior and sold it before he disappeared (a Wikipedia entry). In 1953 the castle was purchased by a private buyer and remains since in private family possession.

The print was published in an album of Vues on the River Rhine. The prints in this album were all trimmed and fitted into a printed frame surrounded by a bordure.

Very good condition, especially pretty: The gouache hand coloring. The black is background and not part of image.

Image: 14,3 x 25,8 cm (ca. 5.6 x 10.2")
