Hollar was a famous artist. He was born in Prague, went as an apprentice to work with and for Matthaeus Merian in Frankfurt on the Main, and then on to London, where he spent his very successful life until his death.

Older names for Emden are Amuthon, Embda, Emda, Embden and Embderland. Town privilege and the town's coat of arms, the Engelke up de Muer (The Little Angel on the Wall) was granted by Emperor Maximilian I in 1495.
