Audubon - Havell edition (1826-1838)

"Blue Grosbeak, Fringilla Coerulea, Bonap Male, 1. Female, 2. Young, 3. Dogwood Cornus florida"

Copper etching by John James Audubon (1785 - 1851)

Numbering: Upper left: N° 25. Upper right: PLATE CXXII

In line with title on left side: Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon F,R,S.F,L,S.

In line with title on right side: Engraved, Printed & Coloured by R. Havell, London.

Watermark: Whatman 1836 in upper left corner

Measurements of sheet: 82,8 x 65,8 cm (ca. 32.6 x 25.9")

Description: Print is clean. Extreme margins (upper margin: 4,7 cm (ca. 1.9"), Right margin: 4,7 cm (ca.1.9"), lower margin: 6 cm (ca. 2.4") left margin: 5,0 cm (ca. 2") had been folded back, probably to fit into a folder, not large enough to fit print.

The folds are far away from image and, after restoration, are not visible from the front. There were a few tears from the folding inwards, but none reaching even near the image.

The very fine hand-coloring are superbly executed. They are fresh and bright and very pleasant to the eye.

This elephant folio print stems from the First Audubon Edition, the famous Havell Edition, published from 1827 to 1838.
