This exceptionally complete 1579 atlas of Bavaria by Peter Weiner contains the full series of 24 Bavarian Landtafeln, also known as the Weinerus Landtafeln, together with the separately bound overview map. It is an important early cartographic record of Upper and Lower Bavaria and a particularly desirable work for collectors of early German maps, Bavarian history, and Renaissance cartography.
The pre-bound overview map presents a reduced version of all 24 copper-engraved Landtafeln, numbered 1 through 24. It is surrounded by 36 coats of arms of Bavarian district towns, of which 34 are completed; one unfinished coat of arms appears on each side.
The atlas is followed by the 24 double-page Landtafeln. Maps 1 and 2, and maps 3 and 4, occupy individual atlas pages because these four maps are only half the height of the remaining plates.
Notable plates
- Map 1: With dedication to Albrecht V, Duke of Bavaria.
- Map 3: With the title Corographia Bavaria.
- Map 4: With a dedication to Albrecht V.
- Map 5: Featuring the large Bavarian coat-of-arms cartouche.
- Map 24: Depicts Justitia crowning the Bavarian lion with the Bavarian lozenge coat of arms. The lion is the heraldic emblem of the Wittelsbach family.
The individual maps have been prepared by a bookbinder so that they can, if desired, be joined together into a single large map, measuring approximately 156 × 159 cm (61.4 × 62.6 inches). When assembled, the complete map is surrounded by a highly decorative Renaissance fruit border.
Peter Weiner and Philipp Apian
This is the complete atlas by the court engraver Peter Weiner, based on the earlier cartographic work of Philipp Apian (1531–1589). Apian's celebrated Chorographia Bavariae was a monumental 24-sheet woodcut map of Bavaria, first published in 1568. Apian held the publishing rights to his map, and after he left Bavaria in 1569, Duke Albrecht V commissioned his court engraver Peter Weiner to produce a comparable version of the map in copper engraving.
The present example is an original 1579 edition, complete and bound.
Condition
The maps are in very good condition. They are clean, with only minimal and scarcely noteworthy signs of age.
The roads have been hand-drawn in red ink as fine lines. On the versos of the maps, cities, markets, monasteries, castles, seats, and bodies of water have been neatly listed in German manuscript in black ink. The ink has nowhere bled through to the engraved fronts of the maps.
