Copper engraving from "Joachimi Camerarii Symbolorum et emblematum centuriae quatuor, quarum prima stirpium secunda animlaium quadrupedium, tertia volatilium et insectium, ....." Published between 1590-1596. Later, these four books were tpublished a single volume, "Symbolorum et Emblematum Centuriae Quatuor" that was published in 1668, This print is from 1668.
Joachim Camerarius (1534-1598) published four books using symbols and emblems about the natural world. Each of the emblems has Latin text with a saying and information about the image. The images are very charming and have been used over the centuries for illustration in other works as well as ceramic tiles.
