Die damals neue Bahn "Funicolare del Vesuvio" führte Vesuv-Touristen bis fast zum Gipfel des Vulkans. Bei dem Ausbruch des Vesuv im Jahr 1906 wurden grosse Teile der Gleisanlagen der seit 1888 von Thomas Cook Reisebüro übernommenen Bahn stark beschädigt.
