Model for this print was the Greek statue from the 2nd century B.C.

Pausanias was born in Lydia (Western Turkey) ca. 115 - ca. 180. He was a Greek writer (travel - describing many parts of Greece in great detail) and geographer.

His description of Olympia included the Olympic Games of which boxing was one of the sportive disciplines. Lacking gloves, the boxer athletes had tied leather ribbons around their fists.
