“A Pattern in Connemara” is an original antique steel engraving depicting traditional life in Connemara, County Galway, western Ireland, one of the most distinctive and historically rich regions of the country. The engraving was produced by H. Griffiths after William Henry Bartlett, circa 1840, and has been given pleasant contemporary hand coloring.

The title refers to the Irish tradition of a “pattern” or patronal festival—a religious gathering held in honor of a local patron saint. Patterns were important events in rural Irish communities, combining pilgrimage and Catholic devotion with social gatherings and traditional customs. Such occasions could draw large numbers of people from the surrounding countryside.

Connemara, Ireland

Connemara occupies much of western County Galway, extending along Ireland's Atlantic coast west of Galway city. The region is renowned for its rugged landscape of mountains, lakes, rocky terrain, and extensive peat bogs, including the Twelve Bens mountain range. In the 19th century, Connemara was regarded by travelers and artists as one of Ireland's most remote and culturally distinctive landscapes.

William Henry Bartlett (1809–1854) was a prolific British landscape artist and illustrator whose detailed views of Ireland helped introduce British and European audiences to the country's scenery, architecture, and traditional life. His Irish subjects frequently combined topographical scenery with depictions of local people and customs, making his work valuable not only as picturesque art but also as a visual record of 19th-century Ireland.

This antique engraving offers a glimpse into the religious traditions and everyday culture of rural Connemara during the early Victorian period, when Ireland's traditional customs and distinctive regional character were attracting increasing attention from travelers and artists.
