Nothing is sadder than the last days
greatest men were barely beginning to make themselves known, died at the age of thirty-two, in the midst of his triumphs, which he crowned with his admirable Requiem.
and when the Requiem was finished, Mozart died; as for the stranger, it is said, he did not return. It was a heavenly messenger who wanted to warn him in this way that his last hour was approaching.
THE LAST DAYS OF MOZART, AFTER HERMANS HAULBACH.
There is something touching in this legend. It recalls those native stories from the Middle Ages which, full of concern for their heroes, do not want to let them die without Heaven caring,
foreseeing his imminent end, devoted his last strength to working with feverish activity on his requiem and which he often said to his friends. It is for me that this mass will be sung for the first time
a lot; for several months, he felt his strength weakening day by day, and while working on the Magic Flute, his last opera, he had frequent fainting spells. His wife and friends surrounded him with the most attentive care,
