"Totius Africae Nova Repraesentatio qua praeter diversos in ea Status et Regiones, etiam Origo Nili es veris  RRPP Missionariorum  Relationibus ostenditur"

Copper etching with very fine original hand coloring.

Published by Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724)

Nuremberg, engraved 1707, published 1715

The African continent was, in 1713, in wide parts still "terra incognita" to Europeans. The outside contures of this large continent were quite well documented, so that the shape was depicted correctly. But the interior was widely unknown. The political realities have changed over and over. since this map was printed, so that the attractive hand coloring we enjoy seeing here is more or less a colorful decorative asset.

The baroque cartouche shows native Africans and some native animals. The Arabian Peninsula is almost entirely shown, as is the southern part of Europe as it reaches into the Mediterranean Sea.

Original antique print

Map shows some minor traces of age and use. There is a bit thumb soiling from turning pages, when the map was still in an atlas. Margins also show some age toning. But the map is generally in very good condition. There is no print on the reverse side

48.8 x 57 cm (ca. 19.2 x 22.4")
