Copper etching after a tapestry by Raffaele d'Urbino (Raffael, Raphael, Raffaello)

The tapestry belongs to the collection "Galleria deli Arazzi" in the Vatican.

They attribute, as the artist, Tommaso Vincidor (1493-1536). Vincidor was in fact an apprentice of Raffaello, working together with him on the various commissions Raffaello had in the Vatican.

We do not have a date when this print was actually printed. However it falls right into the time period in which Volpato, Ottaviani and others invited us all, by their wonderful printed art, to the core of the Vatican, normally closed to the public. So the assumption is, that this beautiful nativity scene was printed ca. 1770 to 1780.

The art style applied is that of Raffaello, which is no wonder when considering that these two men worked so closely together, and Vincidor being the younger and the apprentice, adapting to the Grand Master Raffaello was. On the left, below the artwork, we find this inscription: "Raphael Sanctius inv. & pinx.in Vaticano". Damage to the print was minimal. And yet the print was laid down on heavier paper sometime during its existence. There is foxing to be seen in the margins. And, held up against a source of light, we see a few thin spots in the original paper, which may have causing the laying down, a job that seems to have been done in the 19th century. In the left margin, there is a small notch in the paper, which was repaired. The damage did not even reach the "picture frame" surrounding the image indicating that it was indeed meant to be tapestry.
