Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) was commissioned by Pope Leo X to paint with wall frescos the "Stanze" in the Apostolic Palace (the official Residence of the Pope). This, naturally, was a very high honor granted. Raffaello and his workshop team designed and actually produced an enormous amount of fresco art in the highest of quality. Rafaello, having finished the Papal order, died in 1519, just 37 years of age. He had to everybody's delight, revived the Roman classical antiquity, in the most splendid form. He had, together with Giovanni da Udine visited the excavations of the Titus Palace and seen, with great astonishment and admiration, the wall frescos, the colors and shapes of this art form, which had survived having been buried for centuries amazingly well. As Raffaello and other artists adopted and adapted the classical rendering of art, it was the beginning of the famous Renaissance = Rebirth (of the classics).

The Stanze can be visited, the Loggie rather not. After all this whole architectural complex is part of the private living quarters of the Pope. So we may consider ourselves lucky that able and blessed artists were commissioned to create large folio copper etchings of all of Rafaellos work in the Vatican.

They are impressive, even when "only" black and white. But in gouache hand coloring they are simply magnificent. Many Royals have bought such copper etchings to adorn their chateaus.
