Profession, Genre, Ancient World, Saturnus, dragons, lead mine, Marten de Vos
Copper etching by Marten de Vos (1532-1603)
After the drawing by Crispijn (also Crispin) van de Passe (1564-1637)
Saturnus swinging a scythe on his chariot pulled by two mythical creatures (winged dragons) through the clouds.
Below emblematically depicted men working in a lead mine, a war ship, cannibals having dinner, witches and many other hard to explain hints. In the upper corners we have astrological images of Capricorn (left) and Aquarius (right)
Latin text below image:
Ecce Saturnus minitatur unca
Falce vel parvis sine mentis usu,
Cernis aurigam celerem Draconum
Alite curru.
Astra percurrit senior, petitque
Imbrium Regis loca Capricorni;
Praebet ast dorsum celerans Aquaeri
Cominus urnae.
Possidet Phoebi decus Occidentis
Omne terrarum; reperit fodinas.
Et magos implet genio sinistro
Ceu Deus artis.
Quod riget plumbum, quod habetque pondus,
Iura Saturni subit: huius ergo
Subditi tales animis rigentes
Corde gravescunt.
Very good condition
