"Ptolemäisch general Tafel begreiffend die halbe kugel der weldt"
Hand-colored woodcut
Published in "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Muenster (1488-1552)
German edition
Basel, 1553
Muenster based this rendering of "half the globe of the earth" on Ptolemy's rendering. Ptolemy accounted for the knowledge of the geography of the earth of the second century A.D. Muenster, who had advanced knowledge, published the Ptolemean view to show the development. And indeed, at the time of printing his "Cosmographia" America was discovered and partially surveyed, and the closer to reality shapes of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa had happened. So Muenster proudly published these "world maps" to show progress.
