"Les petits pifferari"
Pifferari are shepards from southern Italy who come to Rome and other places to sing their "piffero"
often to bagpipe music. Most often they came during the Christmas Season and sang
their ancient songs in front of paintings of the Virgin Mary or street corners.
This print shows children as "Pifferari"
This wood engraving was published 1878. On both sides of the image and
on the reverse side is text about children beggars in Rome.
